I was immediately wowed by Starbound ‘s art style, as I am admittedly a sucker for these throwbacks to SNES-era games. Despite a great first impression, Starbound falls flat because of a cookie-cutter plot and gameplay that fails to evolve from its basic core loop. It’s a very enticing premise: take Terraria, give it a sci-fi narrative, and shoot it into orbit. Starbound allows you to become the lone space wanderer of your dreams in a 2D side-scrolling survival game developed by Chucklefish Games. You can understand why I had no other choice but to attempt repairs on my ship with materials gathered from the planet my ship was orbiting. I was alone, hurtling through space in a disabled ship with nothing but my matter manipulator and my Academy training. I grabbed the matter manipulator during my escape and beamed out to my ship, which was badly damaged in the attack. I think I may have been the only one who survived, but I can’t be sure. You see, today was graduation day, and the Academy was attacked by an unknown alien race during the ceremony. We used those games at the Academy to train us in basic survival techniques that would be as applicable on peaceful Omega Gamma IV as they are on the radioactive and extremely dangerous Gorgonea Precipice II. My experience in Minecraft and Terraria would serve me well as a budding lone spaceman on an alien planet. Instinctively, I used my matter manipulator to chop down some trees and gather wood because I knew that if the sun rose, it will certainly fall at some point and night would bring much harsher conditions. I touched down in the middle of a forest, and I could see the sun rising in the background. Be warned that some crew members, like a Tailor, cannot follow you as their specific ability replaces the follow option. As I beamed down from my ship onto the planet Omega Gamma IV, I was pleasantly surprised at my serene surroundings. Ensure that they are following and go off on your adventure. To get a crew member to follow you, simply click on them and they will display a “Following” or “Waiting” message. If you want your crew members to follow you around in Starbound, it’s important to note that you can only have two following you at a time. Once this is done, you’ll be able to keep more people on your ship.

Once you’ve attained either one of these licenses, all you have to do is upgrade your ship by speaking to the NPC, and purchase the necessary upgrade modules.

To do this, you’ll need to either pay for the fake license at the outpost or get a real license by adding to your crew via SAIL. Simply do this every time you want to recruit a new member, but remember you’ll need to upgrade your ship to be able to accommodate more and more crew. To do this, simply target them on the ship and press E. Once you’ve got people happy enough to join you on your Starbound adventure, you’ll need to return to your ship and drop off a crew member. Another way to recruit crew members is to kill Dreadwing and purchase Pengwings. Once you’ve completed whatever prerequisite you needed to in order to gain their favor, they’ll request permission to join your crew. You can get crew members simply by completing quests for them or by helping them in one way or another. Not only that, but they’ll also provide some sort of bonus for either yourself or your ship (well, most will anyway). These are specialized NPCs that will come along with you for your adventure.
